A brief history of our club…
Ocean 50 angling club located in Wynberg - which its detractors said would not last six months - is now in its 38th year.
It came into being when a group of anglers who were part of a large angling club decided to break away to form an exclusive club with limited membership.
On the 19th of july 1970, oceans 50 was formed. the name came about when it was agreed to limit the active anglers to a membership of 50. 25 members signed on at the very beginning, of which 5 are still members and in some ways still very active in the clubs activities and day to day running of the club. To name some… Charlie Bleekers, Neville Scott, Ivan Edwards, Les Geldenhuys and Ralph Wilkinson.
The club members built their own clubhouse beneath wetton road bridge which was later opened in march 1977. The club takes an active part in fishing competitions and has been affilliated to western province shore anglers association for 38 years. The club is proud to have a relationship with Knysna angling club and hosts a reciprocal annual competition with knysna angling club. This year Knysna hosted us in our 23rd competition which took place in Buffels Bay. Knysna took the honours making the scores ever closer. 12 for Oceans 50 to 11 for Knysna A.C.
Shortly after it’s formation in 1970 the club put together a scratch team to compete in the Western Province 1971 league season which they went ahead to win. This feat has yet to be repeated, although coming second on a number of occassions became a regular occurrence. The club has a long and honourable list of top individual anglers including some names such as J Groenewald, J Terblanche, J Punt, P Kehl, P Beales, K Reed, G Boshoff and many more.
As some of the anglers have gotten on a bit, the numbers have slightly decreased in the competitive angling arena, the club is always looking for new members that wish to get actively involved in the sport of angling and would like to share the experience of being part of a family and friendly orientated club. Any interested parties are please to contact the club secretary or the club captain on 021-7611599.
Yours in angling
